Northern Gives A Tool

by Administrator on February 27, 2007

Northern Software has just sent me the following email.  It contains a link to a free utility they are providing that can help you track your “storage utilization” (aka capacity allocation).  Here is the release and the URL for the download.

NORTHERN OFFERS FREE ANALYSIS TOOL FOR “AT-A-GLANCE” ASSESSMENT OF ENTERPRISE CAPACITY USAGE

Northern’s storage analysis tool enables organizations to determine need for storage resource management (SRM)

Tampa, FL – February 27, 2007 — NORTHERN, global providers of flexible, easy to administer, Windows-based storage resource management software solutions, today announces the release of a free storage analysis tool that gives organizations – from large enterprises to SMB’s — a fast and simple way of assessing capacity utilization and determining their need for Storage Resource Management (SRM).

All organizations are experiencing massive data growth, creating a need to manage that data as easily and efficiently as possible. However, not all these organizations recognize the need for a dedicated SRM tool. Northern’s free storage analysis tool gives managers all they information they to begin the process of deciding whether to implement an SRM solution. Users simply point the tool to a given path and within minutes they’ll receive an easy-to-read report on available space, files types stored (i.e., media files), who your top “users” are as well as “age” information on the files that are candidates for archiving/deletion/migration.

Thomas Vernersson, Northern President, said, “All organizations, from the largest to the smallest, are grappling with data protection, archiving, security and availability issues, all under the burden of rapidly growing data. However, not all have sufficiently robust tools in place to efficiently manage this data. Our storage analysis tool simplifies the task of ascertaining whether you are a candidate for SRM by making it easy to discover what’s lying ‘under the hood.’ Typically you need a dedicated reporting tool to get a real handle on your capacity and emerging trends; by making the storage analyzer free and easy-to-use, organizations have every incentive to take a step back and get an accurate assessment of their needs.”

The storage analysis tool is offered as a free stand-alone utility (it can be downloaded at: [URL].)

Northern Storage Suite is a complete SRM package that provides a unique solution to a widely shared problem: managing storage resources efficiently, reliably, cost-effectively. The suite offers quota management, reporting and trend analysis, automation, internal billing and self-management, all within an easy to use and manage framework.

I talked to Lee Taylor, Northern’s Product Manager for Enterprise Storage, at his office in Stockholm this morning.  I wanted to do a level set on why, how and to what extent.

Taylor said that the free download is intended to whet the appetite of folks who have no SRM today but think they might want it.  The tool, Taylor says, can be launched along a specific data path and will scan storage while you drink a cup of coffee.  Five minutes or so later, you get all kinds of information about capacity allocation, aging files, files by type, and orphan files (whose owners are unknown or obsolete according to active directory).

Sounds interesting, though there are many constraints that obfuscate the collection of real data on storage capacity and allocation that no software product can surmount.  I plan to give the utility a try and thank Northern for providing what Taylor calls “a taste of SRM.”
