This one caught me by surprise. I have been a fan of Adaptec’s SNAP line of NAS heads since we tested them in our labs. Actually, we tested them twice — two different generations — and saw them improve consistently and blow the socks off of competitors in the same product levels.
I knew that Adaptec was trying to sell off the business unit a couple of years ago, but when they changed their tune, management told me that they were going to do right by Steve Rogers and the boys and invest some real bucks into promotion and marketing. Previously, they had been reluctant to compete with their own OEMs, leaving the SNAP gang in an awkward position. They even hired Suresh Panikar, IMHO one of the best marketing guys in the business, to help out.
Well, times change. Overland has the boxes now — except for the 700, which is described in the FAQ as a “SAN.”
Updated: I am modifying this post after talking with Overland VP Ravi Pendekanti regarding my takeaway from their announcement email. Their confusing missive suggested that they would keep the software and jettison the box, which Pedekanti insisted is not the case.
The current plan is to support the full line of SNAP gear and to build it into Overland’s extensive line of products, which previously did not feature NAS.
Steve Rogers, the SNAP mastermind and all-around good guy, is going to Overland with his babies. Doubtless, he will have an enormously positive impact on the entire breadth of products from the vendor, helping to build the end-to-end vision that Overland is seeking to create. I wish them all great luck.
